From a Small Farm in Nagano to Tokyo and Yokohama
Farm Aruga begins a new chapter at Wakuwaku Hiroba.
October 23, 2026 | FARM ARUGA
From the quiet rice fields of the Ina Valley in Nagano to the vibrant neighborhoods of Tokyo and Yokohama.
This autumn, something new is beginning at Farm Aruga.
Our rice, vegetables and herbal tea are making their way to Wakuwaku Hiroba.
For years, we have shared our harvest through our online shop, annual rice subscriptions and local retailers.
Now, we have the chance to introduce our farm to people who may never have heard of us before.
Perhaps someone will discover our rice while shopping in Azabu-Juban.
Or come across an unusual vegetable in Nihonbashi.
Or find a new favorite herbal tea in Yokohama.
We love the idea that something grown in our small fields can become part of someone’s everyday life in the city.
Grown Between Two Mountain Ranges
Farm Aruga is located in the Ina Valley of Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by Japan’s Southern and Central Alps.
Here, the seasons shape our daily work.
The changing colors of the mountains.
The breeze moving through the rice fields.
The difference between warm days and cool nights.
We grow rice, vegetables and herbs while paying close attention to the land and the changing weather.
We also work to reduce the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
Farming is not always predictable.
Some years, the weather makes harvesting particularly difficult.
But there is something deeply rewarding about knowing that what we grow will eventually become part of someone’s meal.
Four Things We Would Love You to Discover
Our new selection at Wakuwaku Hiroba includes two varieties of Japanese rice, an unusual root vegetable and a fragrant herbal tea.
Each one has its own character and story.
01 | Kame-no-O — A Rare Japanese Heritage Rice
Kame-no-O is a historic Japanese rice variety that dates back to the Meiji era.
Today, it is much less commonly found in ordinary supermarkets.
Its tall plants require careful cultivation, but we continue growing it because of its distinctive character.
The 2026 harvest has a pronounced aroma and a satisfying, well-defined grain texture.
Its sweetness develops gradually as you chew, followed by a clean, light finish.
It pairs beautifully with sashimi, grilled fish and simple Japanese dishes.
A rice for slowing down and enjoying the meal itself.
02 | Koshihikari — Everyday Japanese Rice, Grown with Care
Koshihikari is one of Japan’s most beloved rice varieties.
Known for its pleasant stickiness, gentle sweetness and satisfying texture, it is a natural choice for everyday meals.
Freshly steamed rice.
A simple onigiri.
Lunch packed for the next day.
Sometimes, the most familiar foods are the ones we appreciate most.
At Farm Aruga, we store our harvested rice as paddy rice under low-temperature conditions.
We then hull and mill it closer to the time of shipment.
We believe caring for rice after harvest is just as important as growing it.
Good food begins with care, even in the smallest everyday moments.
03 | Red Jerusalem Artichoke — Something Unexpected for Your Kitchen
One of the more unusual products we are introducing is our red-skinned Jerusalem artichoke, known in Japanese as beni-kikuimo.
With its reddish-purple skin and distinctive shape, it might look unfamiliar at first.
But it is surprisingly versatile in the kitchen.
Slice it thinly for a crisp salad.
Roast it with olive oil and a little sea salt.
Or turn it into a smooth, comforting soup.
Its crunchy texture makes it particularly enjoyable in simple preparations.
Sometimes, discovering one unfamiliar ingredient is enough to make cooking exciting again.
A little culinary curiosity, grown in Nagano.
04 | Tulsi Tea — A Quiet Moment in a Busy Day
Tulsi, also known as holy basil, is an aromatic herb with a long cultural history.
We grow tulsi at Farm Aruga and dry the harvested leaves and flowers for herbal tea.
Its distinctive, refreshing aroma makes it a lovely companion to a quiet moment.
After lunch.
Between meetings.
On a slow weekend afternoon.
Simply add hot water, enjoy the fragrance and take a moment for yourself.
A small pause in the rhythm of everyday life.

From the Farmer, or From Your Neighborhood Store
For many years, our online shop and annual rice subscriptions have helped us connect directly with customers.
We reserve rice for households, store it carefully and prepare it for delivery according to their needs.
But not everyone discovers food by searching online for a particular farm.
Sometimes, you find something wonderful by accident.
On your way home from work.
While exploring a neighborhood.
During an ordinary shopping trip.
You see a bag of rice or an unfamiliar vegetable and decide to give it a try.
We think those unexpected encounters are part of the pleasure of food.
Whether you buy directly from our farm or discover us in a city store, we hope our harvest finds a place in your everyday life.
What a Small Farm Can Offer
Farm Aruga is not a large agricultural company.
We are a small farm working with the seasons in the Ina Valley.
We cannot produce unlimited quantities of everything.
Some products, especially Kame-no-O rice and red Jerusalem artichokes, are available only in limited amounts.
But being small also allows us to stay close to what we grow.
We can tell you why we chose a particular rice variety.
How we like to cook it.
What happened in the fields during the season.
And why we keep growing crops that are sometimes more challenging than conventional choices.
We hope those stories become part of the experience of enjoying our food.
A Little Farther Beyond the Rice Fields
Azabu-Juban.
Nihonbashi.
Ikebukuro.
Yokohama Motomachi.
These neighborhoods can feel a world away from our quiet rice fields.
Yet somewhere in those cities, someone might cook our Kame-no-O rice for the first time.
Someone might discover red Jerusalem artichokes and try a new recipe.
Someone might enjoy a cup of our tulsi tea after a long day.
That thought makes us happy.
Food grown in the Ina Valley, becoming part of everyday life in Tokyo and Yokohama.
It is a small but meaningful new step for Farm Aruga.
If you ever see our name on a shelf, we hope you will take a closer look.
And perhaps, for a moment, imagine the mountains and fields where it all began.
