SPA JUNGLIA(スパ ジャングリア)です。
Okinawa in Autumn 2026: Shuri Castle, JUNGLIA and Why We Travel
Updated September 2026
Every year, I find myself wanting to return to Okinawa.
Some years I visit Ishigaki Island. Other years, the main island of Okinawa.
I love the ocean, the food, the towns, the culture and the slower rhythm of island life.
And yes, I like Orion Beer too.
I grow rice in the Ina Valley of Nagano, far from Okinawa, but traveling there often gives me new ways of thinking about my own work.
In autumn 2026, there are two places in Okinawa that particularly interest me.
The restored Shuri Castle and JUNGLIA OKINAWA.
I visited Shuri Castle in 2016
I first visited Shuri Castle in 2016.
At the time, I never imagined that the main hall would be destroyed by fire only a few years later.
When we travel, it is easy to assume that the places in front of us will always remain there.
Sometimes they do not.
Perhaps that is one reason why seeing a place with your own eyes matters.
Shuri Castle returns in November 2026
After years of reconstruction following the 2019 fire, the restored main hall is scheduled to open to the public in November 2026.
Having seen Shuri Castle before the fire, I would really like to see it again.
The same place, ten years later.
I have not booked a trip yet.
For now, I am simply thinking, “Maybe I should go back to Okinawa this November.”
And then there is JUNGLIA OKINAWA
JUNGLIA OKINAWA is another place that has caught my attention.
Not only because I love Okinawa.
I am also interested in it from the perspective of someone who runs a small business.
How do you create a reason for people to travel all the way to a particular place?
Travelers have limited time.
They may want the beach, great food, a relaxing hotel or a day in Naha.
Convincing someone to use part of that limited time to visit a new destination is fascinating from a business perspective.
Actually, I am most curious about SPA JUNGLIA
Of all the experiences at JUNGLIA, the one that interests me most may not be an attraction at all.
It is SPA JUNGLIA.
An infinity bath overlooking the forests of Yambaru sounds much closer to the kind of Okinawa experience I personally enjoy.
That itself is interesting.
Different people can find completely different reasons to visit the same destination.
Why do people go out of their way to visit somewhere?
Shuri Castle and JUNGLIA are very different places.
One carries centuries of history and culture.
The other represents a new tourism experience.
Yet both make me think about the same question.
Why do people go out of their way to visit a particular place?
Because it is famous?
Because it is new?
Because there is something there that cannot be experienced anywhere else?
Or because the place has a story?
Perhaps rice is not so different
This may sound like an abrupt change of subject, but it makes me think about farming too.
You can buy rice almost anywhere in Japan.
Supermarkets have plenty of it, and ordering online is easy.
Yet some people still find our small farm in the Ina Valley and choose to buy rice directly from us.
That too is a kind of “going out of your way.”
So we have to ask ourselves:
Why choose Farm Aruga?
There should be more to it than simply “good rice”
Of course, the rice has to taste good.
But perhaps people are also interested in who grows it, where it comes from, how it is stored and why we choose to grow particular varieties.
Maybe they are even interested in the person behind the rice.
That is why, occasionally, this blog will wander away from the rice fields and talk about Okinawa.
New things and things that endure
JUNGLIA represents something new.
Shuri Castle represents history and culture being carried into the future.
Agriculture has both as well.
We can embrace new ideas and technology while still being fascinated by older varieties and traditions that have survived for generations.
Perhaps that is part of why we grow historic rice varieties such as Kame-no-O at Farm Aruga.
New does not automatically mean better.
Old does not automatically mean better either.
What interests me is why some places, ideas and foods continue to matter to people.
Maybe Okinawa in November 2026?
I saw Shuri Castle in 2016.
Ten years later, I could see the restored main hall.
Perhaps visit JUNGLIA while I am on the main island.
And finish the day soaking in SPA JUNGLIA while looking over the forests of Yambaru.
Actually, that sounds like a pretty good trip.
I have not decided yet.
But after writing all this, I definitely want to go.
Most days I look at rice fields in the Ina Valley.
Sometimes it is good to travel far away and look at a completely different landscape.
And then bring whatever I discover back home.
Shuri Castle and JUNGLIA OKINAWA.
Maybe November is the time to go.
