Where Should You Buy Japanese Rice? Supermarkets, Farmers and Local Markets

Updated September 2026

Where do you usually buy your rice?

At a supermarket?

Online?

Directly from a farmer?

Or perhaps at a local farmers’ market?

Today, there are many different ways to buy Japanese rice.

At Farm Aruga, we grow rice in the Ina Valley of Nagano and sell it through several different channels, including our own online shop, annual rice subscriptions and local stores.

Now, we are also preparing to explore a new place to sell our rice: Wakuwaku Hiroba, a Japanese marketplace featuring products from farmers and producers.

So what is actually different about buying rice from a supermarket, online, directly from a farmer or through a local market?

There is no single best place to buy rice

Our answer is simple.

There is no single way of buying rice that is right for everyone.

Rice is an everyday food.

Price matters, but so do convenience, variety, storage, milling preferences and how much rice your household eats.

The best choice is the one that works for your own lifestyle.

Buying rice at a supermarket

For many people, supermarkets are the easiest place to buy rice.

You can pick it up with your regular groceries, compare different varieties and price ranges, and buy another bag whenever you run out.

You can also see the actual package before buying it.

For convenience, supermarkets remain an excellent option.

Buying Japanese rice online

Online shopping offers a much wider range of choices.

You can discover rice from different regions of Japan, unusual varieties and individual farms that you would never encounter at your local supermarket.

And the rice is delivered directly to your home.

For people who enjoy exploring different kinds of Japanese rice, online shopping can be particularly interesting.

Buying rice directly from a farmer

As farmers, we are naturally happy when someone chooses to buy directly from us.

But we believe the value of farm-direct rice is about more than simply shortening the distribution route.

You can learn who grew the rice.

Where it was grown.

Which variety it is.

How it was stored after harvest.

And how it is prepared before shipping.

You are not only choosing rice. You can understand the story and process behind it.

How we store rice at Farm Aruga

At Farm Aruga, we grow several varieties in the Ina Valley, including Koshihikari, Milky Queen, Kazesayaka, Kame-no-O and Sasashigure.

After harvest, we do not immediately process our entire crop into brown or white rice.

Instead, the rice is stored as paddy rice under low-temperature conditions.

We hull it closer to the time of shipment, and when white rice is requested, it is then milled.

Customers can also choose brown rice or partially milled rice.

For us, rice farming does not end at harvest.

Storage and milling are part of the journey from our fields to your table.

Buying rice at a local farmers’ market

Local markets offer something between a supermarket and buying directly from a farmer.

You can see the product before purchasing it, while also knowing the name of the producer and where the food was grown.

There is also the possibility of discovery.

You may see a bag of rice from a farmer you have never heard of and simply think:

“That looks interesting. I want to try it.”

We think that kind of unexpected connection is one of the best things about local markets.

Farm Aruga is exploring a new place to sell our rice

This year, we are preparing for another new challenge.

We are exploring selling Farm Aruga rice through Wakuwaku Hiroba.

Until now, many customers have found us through our annual rice subscriptions, our online shop or local stores.

We would like to create another doorway.

Someone who has never searched for Farm Aruga online might simply discover a bag while shopping and think:

“Rice from the Ina Valley in Nagano? Maybe I’ll try it.”

We like that idea.

Why expand where we sell?

As farmers, it is easy to concentrate entirely on growing.

Preparing the soil.

Growing seedlings.

Planting.

Managing the fields.

Harvesting.

But growing rice alone does not put it on someone’s dinner table.

We also have to think about how people discover it.

Some customers find farmers online.

Others discover food while shopping in a physical store.

We want to create more opportunities for those connections to happen.

Farm-direct is not the only right answer

Of course, we appreciate every customer who buys directly from our farm.

But everyone buys rice differently.

Some people want to pick it up during their weekly supermarket trip.

Some want to search for rice from all over Japan online.

Some enjoy seeing the farmer’s name on products at a local market.

Others want to reserve their household’s rice directly with a farmer.

What matters is having a way to buy rice that fits your life.

Keep your year’s supply of rice with the farmer

Farm Aruga also offers an annual rice subscription.

For us, this is about more than automatically sending a bag every month.

The idea is:

Your household’s rice for the year is reserved with the farmer.

You do not have to store an entire year’s supply at home.

The rice can remain with us and be delivered according to your household’s pace.

You can choose white rice, brown rice or partially milled rice, and adjust the delivery interval to suit your needs.

It is another way for farmers and the people who eat their rice to stay connected.

From our fields, a little farther

Rice grown in a field in the Ina Valley can eventually reach a town we have never visited and a family we have never met.

That is one of the things we find fascinating about farming.

Some people discover us online.

Some find us in a local store.

And perhaps, in the future, someone will discover Farm Aruga rice at Wakuwaku Hiroba.

The doorway may be different.

But inside the bag is the same rice we grew here in our fields.

Growing matters.

Storage matters.

And so does finding ways to meet the people who will eventually eat what we grow.

This year, Farm Aruga is going a little farther beyond the rice fields.
